As a Legal Counsel, Risk Management for PCL Constructors Inc. in Edmonton, Alberta (Corporate), reoorting to Vice President, Risk Management, you’ll be a trusted advisor, empowering PCL teams with strategic legal and insurance guidance that directly supports our business goals. You’ll help stakeholders navigate complex legal and claims‑related matters, identifying innovative, cost‑effective solutions that align with PCL’s strategic plan and protect our operational success.
You’ll also play a key role in maximizing recovery on first‑party insurance claims and safeguarding the organization against third‑party exposures. Your expertise will help drive sound decision‑making, reduce risk, and strengthen PCL’s overall resilience.
In addition, you’ll contribute to a wide range of corporate and solicitor‑related legal tasks, collaborating with our Risk Management team to support evolving business needs and ensure we continue to lead confidently in a dynamic industry..

Here's how a Legal Counsel, Risk Management for PCL Constructors Inc. within Edmonton NAHQ contributes to our team:
Responsibilities
- Provides strategy and direction for the pursuit of insurance coverage and recovery where applicable.
- Retains and manages external coverage counsel.
- Works with the Risk Management Team on policy placements and recoveries for operations that span international and North American building, civil, and industrial construction projects.
- Works with other members of the PCL Legal Team.
- Provides internal coverage opinions regarding all insurance policies applicable to PCL (including corporate master program policies, owner‑controlled, and project‑specific policies) on all applicable losses.
- Assists with specific Errors & Omissions and Employment Practices Liability cases with insurers for all claims within these programs.
- Reviews and provides recommendations for PCL’s corporate insurance program and insurance‑related and risk‑management contracts to the Vice President, Risk Management. Such agreements may include third‑party service agreements, trust and banking agreements, and insurance policy wordings.
- Ensures a consistent approach to PCL’s insurance claims handling throughout the company, maintaining best practices and managing third‑party adjuster relationships.
- Ensures the overall strategy of “boots on the ground” for liability claims, monitors first‑party claims activity, and elevates issues appropriately with insurers where applicable.
- Coordinates and conducts claim review meetings with all districts and provides direction for best practices.
- Supports the Captive Insurance company’s legal, governance, finance strategies, and processes.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years experience with insurance or construction related legal practice.
- A post-secondary degree in Law.
- Strong leadership skills and results orientated.
- Strong technical acumen in insurance.
- Excellent analytic, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to cope under pressure in a fast paced environment.
- Self-directed, results-oriented, able to work under extremely tight deadlines.
- Ability to plan, organize and maintain attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with an emphasis on presentation, negotiation, and ability to influence others.
- Ability to understand broad and complex business issues.
- Strong project management skills.
- Dynamic, proactive and decisive personality who adapts well to and initiates change.
- Knowledge of construction means and methods, problem identification, and project scheduling an asset.
- Experience working with and interpreting financial statements an asset.
- Ability to network with internal and external alliances including underwriters, brokers, internal stakeholders, clients and lenders.
- Willingness to travel throughout Canada and the United States.
