Here's how a(n) Claims Management Counsel for our US Head Office office contributes to our team:

Responsibilities

Reporting to Risk Management Counsel in North American Headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, activities include:


•    Acting as a trusted advisor to all US Districts and US Head Office for the timely resolution of first-party and
•    third-party insurable losses/claims and litigation (property, casualty, subcontractor default, financial services
•    coverage, etc.). 
•    Leveraging insurance and alternative risk transfer opportunities in a manner attuned to shareholder interests,
•    external stakeholder interests, and PCL’s overall risk mitigation philosophy (which incorporates a captive
•    insurance company). 
•    Collaborating with Districts and PCL Legal Counsel to gather and present the information necessary to
•    investigate, substantiate or defend claims and, where necessary, retaining third party support (claims
•    preparation, experts, external counsel).
•    Interpreting the content of, and interaction between, various insurance policies (PCL Master program,
•    Contractor/Owner Controlled Insurance Programs, project specific policies) and relevant legislation.
•    Monitoring open claims/litigation and Third Party Administrator (TPA) activity for captive lines through regular
•    and ad hoc claim review meetings.  
•    Remaining current on risk management trends and facilitating internal educational seminars. 
•    As necessary: 
•    Support Risk Management team with policy placements and preferred wording recommendations;
•    Supporting the establishment of an in-house US brokerage

Qualifications

You are a curious, adaptable, and self-directed attorney with a minimum of 5 years of insurance and/or construction law experience in the United States. You thrive under pressure in a high stakes, fast paced environment. Your excellent communication skills allow you to communicate your opinions as clearly, persuasively, and decisively to a senior executive as you would to a project superintendent. Although you are attentive to detail, your business-savvy mindset enables you to see the forest for the trees and to recognize when the best strategy may not be found in the four corners of a contract. You are able to work independently and in a team environment.

 

You’re located in Denver or willing to relocate to Denver to work out of our Denver office. You’re also willing to travel regularly throughout the United States and, occasionally, Canada.

 

It would be an asset if you have knowledge/experience with any of the following:

  • Construction means and methods, problem identification, and project scheduling.
  • Working with and interpreting financial statements.
  • Claims in the States of Florida, California, Minnesota, Hawaii, Washington, Colorado and Texas
  • Workers Compensation claims.

The salary range for this position is between $175,000 and $200,000 per annum, based on experience and qualifications.
