As a Mining Superintendent for PCL Industrial Constructors Inc. in Edmonton, Alberta (Industrial), you'll have the opportunity to lead all field operations to construct a single major project. You will oversee on-site construction activities and ensures project plans and schedule are followed and that the project is executed effectively, safely and within budget.

Responsibilities
• Develops, implements, and maintains the PCL safety program, including creating and influencing jobsite safety culture through mentorship and modelling.
• Consistently collaborates with the construction/project manager and project team. Proactively identifies, manages, and resolves potential problems, work conflicts, or schedule challenges. Develops and implements a recovery plan. Works with project team to anticipate and resolve project issues.
• Effectively communicates with own forces and trades and ensures performance, productivity, quality, and safety requirements are met. Oversees subcontractor coordination and progress.
• Liaises with the owner, EPCM/engineering representatives, mine operations, other site contractors, and office representatives.
• Supervises, directs, coaches, trains, and mentors the project team and superintendents on the same site or multiple sites.
• Involved in selecting, onboarding, and placing jobsite field staff.
• Visualizes and conveys the vision for an entire project; identifies and drives the project schedule’s critical path; anticipates constructability issues; troubleshoots; and embeds solutions in construction plans and schedules.
• Leads field execution of above-ground mining infrastructure, such as process plants and concentrators, crushing and conveying systems, tailings and water management facilities, truck shops, and site services, including civil, concrete, structural steel, mechanical equipment, piping, and electrical scopes.
• Works with the project management team to develop and implement the Project Execution Plan (PEP).
• Ensures compliance with district policies, safety procedures, equipment, and quality control.
• Ensures prompt scheduling, coordination and effective cost control pertaining to project labor, equipment, and materials.
• Influences equipment selection and construction methodology for formwork systems, cranes, and heavy-lift plans, modularization and pre-assembly, and setting of major equipment (e.g., crushers, grinding mills, conveyors, thickeners).
• Plans and executes work in or adjacent to operating mine facilities, coordinating access, shutdowns, energy isolations, and tie-ins with mine operations to protect personnel and production.
• Reviews and understands the contract and subcontracts and develops a plan that identifies and mitigates risks (e.g., scope gaps) and maximizes opportunities to ensure that all financial targets, including budgets, forecasts, and profitability levels, are achieved. Assigns subcontract review to area superintendents.
• Drives systems-based completions, including mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, punch lists, and turnover documentation, and supports the owner through commissioning and start-up.
• Plans remote-site logistics, including camp, rotational crew schedules, transportation, laydown, and material delivery sequencing.
• Stays current with industry practices and seeks new and innovative construction methods and initiatives.
Qualifications
• Journeyman certificate or postsecondary diploma / /engineering degree in a related discipline.
• NCSO designation (IND) and Gold Seal certification required (CDN), certificate in negotiation or equivalent experience.
• 15 years of progressive experience in field supervision preferred.
• Demonstrated experience as a superintendent on above-ground mining infrastructure projects (e.g., process plants, concentrators, material handling systems, tailings facilities).
• In-depth knowledge of and experience in the construction industry and company operations, including materials, construction specifications, and methods and procedures.
• Experience executing work in brownfield or operating mine environments, including shutdown planning, energy isolation and lockout, and coordination with mine operations.
• Experience with mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, and turnover processes for industrial or mining facilities.
• Understanding of project scope and able to apply complex engineering principles to construction challenges and embed solutions in construction plans and schedules. Ability to complete value engineering and define scope and limitations for pursuits.
• Experience with scheduling, monitoring, and mentoring others on resource forecasting.
• Ability to lead and manage others, including coordinating multiple scopes.
• Thorough understanding of contract language and ability to identify and mitigate risks and identify and leverage opportunities.
• Understanding of collective agreements and jurisdiction assignment for multi-trade sites (IND).
• In-depth knowledge of and application of safety and environmental principles/ procedures/legislation and demonstrated experience in implementing a strong safety culture.
• Working knowledge of mining-specific regulatory and site-access requirements (e.g., provincial mines acts and regulations in Canada; MSHA requirements in the U.S.).
• Ability to lead effective site meetings with the client, consultants, trades, own forces work (OFW), and internal employees; ability to present at client meetings or for project pursuit work.
• Experience mitigating grievance and employee relations issues.
• Demonstrated conflict-resolution skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional judgment.
• Expert understanding of productivity rates of own forces work (OFW), Labour Cost Reports (LCRs), and ability to interpret cost reports.
• Willingness to work at remote sites on a rotational schedule.
