Here's how a Cost & Controls Project Engineer for PCL Construction, Inc. within Civil West contributes to our team:

Responsibilities

  • Cost Management & Forecasting

    • Assist in the development, maintenance, and management of project budgets and cost reports
    • Track and analyze project costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors
    • Support monthly cost forecasting and estimate-at-completion (EAC) processes
    • Identify cost trends, risks, and opportunities; provide recommendations to project leadership
    • Monitor committed vs. actual costs and ensure alignment with project budgets

    Project Controls & Reporting

    • Maintain accurate and timely cost reports, dashboards, and performance metrics
    • Support earned value management (EVM) and productivity tracking where applicable
    • Assist in developing and maintaining project schedules in coordination with scheduling teams
    • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to cost, schedule, and productivity
    • Prepare and distribute regular project financial and progress reports

    Change Management

    • Support the change order process, including pricing, tracking, and documentation
    • Evaluate cost and schedule impacts of changes and potential risks
    • Ensure all changes are properly captured and reflected in project forecasts

    Collaboration & Communication

    • Work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Accounting teams to ensure accurate reporting
    • Participate in project meetings to provide cost and schedule insights
    • Assist in subcontractor and vendor coordination related to cost tracking and billing
    • Support audits and internal reviews related to project financials

    Systems & Process Improvement

    • Utilize project management and cost control systems (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6, SAP, Viewpoint)
    • Identify opportunities to improve cost control processes, reporting accuracy, and efficiency
    • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and financial controls

Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture preferred, or equivalent experience. 
  • 4–6 years of construction experience in an operational role preferred. 
  • Detailed knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawings and specifications, project health, safety, and environment (HSE), quality, building materials, and required standards as per subject area. 
  • Ability to apply basic engineering/problem-solving principles to construction challenges. 
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Proven flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Planning, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize own work, and direct-report tasks. 
  • Able to create and lead schedules a comprehensive scale. 
  • Ability to formulate subcontracts and administer subcontracts and contract documents. 
  • Proven understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and internal operational systems with a strong skills for embracing new technology.
